What Is Oculus Rift S

Oculus Rift S is a virtual reality headset that was created by Oculus VR. Its predecessor is Oculus Rift CV1, a first generation headset and the first device in the Oculus Rift lineup, which has been discontinued as of March 2019, although its software is still supported by the company.

The second generation headset, by the name of Oculus Rift S, uses an LCD panel with a resolution of 2560×1440, a refresh rate of 80Hz and next-generation lenses, thus delivering an ultra-high detailed and sharper image to the wearer. The improved optics deliver bright, vivid colors and a reduced “screen-door” effect.

As for the sound, a pair of speakers is integrated into the headband, two inches above your ears, but the headset also gives you the option to use your own headphones, since it is equipped with a 3.5mm mini jack.

The headset has an ergonomic design, which allows you to focus on gaming rather than worrying if it falls off your head. It is lightweight, which translates into hours of game play without neck-pains. With Oculus insight tracking, your movements translate into VR, providing you with a room-scale tracking, without the need for external sensors to do the job.

Lastly, Oculus Rift S comes with its precision touch controllers, which realistically transport your hands and gestures into the game.

What You Need to Know Before You Buy It

For sure, one of the most important things you should consider before buying Oculus Rift S is your PC’s hardware. Since this particular headset works with a computer, you need to ask yourself whether your PC is ready to support the power needed for this headset to run properly.

The recommended PC requirements by Oculus are these:

Graphics Card: NVIDIA GTX 1060 / AMD Radeon RX 480 or greater

Alternative Graphics Card: NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD Radeon R9 290 or greater

CPU: Intel i3-6100 / AMD Ryzen 3 1200. FX4350 or greater

Memory: 8GB+ RAM

Video Output: DisplayPort 1.2 / Mini DisplayPort (with adapter included in the box)

USB Ports: 1x USB 3.0 port

OS: Windows 10

Keep in mind that there are excellent alternatives if you don’t want a PC based VR headset, like the Oculus Quest, which is considered one of the best VR headsets there is, and of course PSVR, which is again one of the the best headsets for consoles.

Another thing you should consider: if you already have an Oculus Rift CV1, it might not be worth to upgrade to Oculus Rift S, unless you want to get rid of the external sensors and have a better display with improved lenses.

The Positive Side

Oculus Rift S offers an amazing library of games, which includes many famous titles like Beat Saber, Vader Immortal, Job Simulator and Superhot.

It has a built-in room tracking system, which allows you to freely walk around the play area, with your real-life movements reflected in the VR environment.

It comes with Oculus’s incredible touch controllers.

The Negative Side

In order to use it, a very powerful (and expensive) PC is required.

Our Verdict

A great VR headset for PC users, Oculus Rift S definitely meets the standards of an authentic VR experience without limits. Its insane graphics, ergonomic design and key features like its touch controllers guarantee to offer an unforgettable experience to the user. If you don’t have the money to support a powerful PC though, you might consider other alternatives, like Oculus Quest or PSVR.

Taking all the above mentioned factors into consideration, we give this headset a score of 8.7 out of 10.
